September’s registered unemployed at 15-year low

The number of registered unemployed on the last day of September 2023 dropped to the lowest level since June 2008, according to CySTAT.

Specifically, based on data kept at the District Labour Offices, the number of registered unemployed persons at the end of September 2023 fell to its lowest level in more than 15 years to 9,693 persons, down from 13,256 the previous month and from 11,610 in September 2022.

Moreover, based on seasonally adjusted data that show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed in September 2023 decreased to 11,910 persons, in comparison to 12,385 in the previous month. This is the lowest number of registered unemployed based on seasonally adjusted data since December 2008.

Compared to September 2022, there was a decrease of 1,917 persons or 16.5%, attributed mainly to the sectors of trade, accommodation and food service activities, construction, administrative and support service activities, as well as to a smaller number of newcomers in the labour market.
