Cypriot board game startup up for international awards

Cypriot startup Hegemonic Project Games, its designers and its game, ‘Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory’ are among the finalists shortlisted in four categories at the Tabletop Awards 2023 by Dicebreaker.
Dicebreaker is an international tabletop games news website based in the UK and the Tabletop Awards are described as an annual celebration of the best that tabletop gaming has to offer. According to Dicebreaker, the awards recognise innovation and excellence in board games, card games and tabletop RPGs, as well as the designers and publishers behind the games.
The winners are selected by a jury of experts from across the entire tabletop industry, with a People’s Choice award decided by the voting public.
The Tabletop Awards include categories spanning board games, tabletop RPGs and ongoing card games, with dedicated awards for Designer and Publisher of the Year in two categories, aimed at recognising both established talent and up-and-coming ‘Rising Stars’.
Hegemony which is currently ranked in BoardGameGeek’s top 250 games with a rating of 8.5/10 and more than 3,200 reviews is shortlisted for the top award of “Best Board Game” of the Year.
BoardGameGeek is an online forum for board gaming hobbyists and a game database that holds reviews, images and videos for over 125,600 different tabletop games.
At the same time Varnavas Timotheou and Vangelis Bagiartakis, co-designers of the game, are shortlisted for the awards of ‘Rising Star: Designer’ and ‘Designer of the Year’ respectively.
The Hegemonic Project Games team is also competing for the award in the ‘Rising Star: Publisher’ category.
In addition, ‘Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory’ is also competing in the ‘Tabletop Awards 2023: People's Choice’ category that is open to public vote.
Speaking to GOLD magazine soon after the game’s launch, Timotheou, founder and CEO of Hegemonic Project Games, explained that ‘Hegemony: Lead Your Class to Victory’ immerses players – up to four people – in a fictional state where they can simulate economic and political principles to influence the course of the nation by acting as one of four interest groups: Working Class, Middle Class, Capitalist Class and the State.
