Eni set to start key appraisal drilling at Cronos-2

Eni is set to start drilling a key appraisal well on its Cronos-2 gas discovery offshore Cyprus using the same semi-submersible rig that just completed a project for TotalEnergies offshore Lebanon.
Discovered in 2022, Cronos lies in deep-water block 6 close to Eni’s Calypso and Zeus finds in the same acreage.
The Transocean Barrents drilling rig has already set off from Limassol port and headed to the target, some 160km southwest of Cyprus, sources told the Cyprus News Agency.
They added that the appraisal drilling is expected to last until the end of the year or early 2024.
Back in August 2022, Italian energy giant Eni announced that it discovered 2.5 trillion cubic metres (tcf) of natural gas at the Cronos-1 target, adding that there potentially were more quantities that would be confirmed with another appraisal drilling.
The Cronos-2 drilling will be the company’s third in block 6 of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (it also discovered the Calypso deposit back in 2018).
Eni owns 50% of the exploration rights to block 6, with the other half belonging to TotalEnergies.
