Ηead of Humanitarian Issues for missing and enclaved meets with UNFICYP adviser

Head of Humanitarian Issues for the Missing and enclaved Anna Aristotelous met with Senior Adviser at the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Aderemi Adekoya who was accompanied by Munehiko Harada, UNFICYP's Civil Affairs Officer.

A press release by the Presidency said that the meeting took place in the framework of efforts to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations Office in Cyprus.

Both sides discussed various technical and other issues in order to explore ways to deal with any potential difficulties in a timely and efficient manner and to avoid unnecessary delays.

Furthermore, humanitarian issues were discussed with the aim of improving the living conditions of the enclaved and those who chose to resettle in their occupied villages. Aristotelous and Adekoya agreed to have regular meetings.

The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, has been divided by Turkish troops since the invasion in the summer of 1974, which forcibly expelled about 180,000 Greek Cypriots from their homes.

Another 20,000 Greek Cypriots, who had remained in the occupied areas, were also forced to eventually abandon their homes and seek refuge in the safety of the government-controlled areas. Today, very few enclaved Greek Cypriots remain in the occupied areas.
