How the €320m expansion of Limassol Port - Terminal 2 (Vasiliko) will be carried out

The expansion of the Limassol port - Terminal 2 (Vassiliko) has been put forward for public consultation through the Department of Environment.

This is a project that is part of the strategic objectives of the Republic of Cyprus and the medium-term planning of the Cyprus Ports Authority and concerns the expansion of the port in order to cover the handling of dry bulk cargo, the port/auxiliary needs of the mining industry, the docking of various types of vessels, and other port needs.

Based on the environmental study, the preliminary budget of the entire project amounts to €320 million (VAT not included). Included in this cost are electromechanical works, the removal of existing facilities, preliminary work and studies and licensing.

Some 30% of the project will be financed by the European Union while the remaining percentage will come from the Republic’s own resources.

The project’s capacity

The expansion project of the port of Limassol - Terminal 2 (Vasiliko) is classified within the category of port works and is divided into the following main works:

  • Removal of the last part of the existing windward breakwater to a length of approximately 400 meters and construction/extension to a length of approximately 1,200 meters.
  • Construction of a new 275-meter-long leeward breakwater.
  • Construction of a 230 m by 125m pier at the location of an existing leeward breakwater.
  • Extension of the existing wharf on the west side of the existing port basin 115 meters long.
  • Extension of the existing wharf on the north side of the existing port basin 50 meters long.
  • Construction of a new wharf on the north side of the new 385-meter-long port basin.
  • Construction of a new wharf on the eastern north side of the new port basin on the inner side of the 195-meter-long breakwater.
  • Construction of a new wharf on the inner side of the southern/leeward breakwater with a total length of 1,035 meters.
  • Dredging of the new port basin up to the -15m CD level.
  • Dredging of the space between the existing port basin and the new port basin up to the -13m CD level.
  • Deepening of the approach channel up to the level of 16.5m CD.
  • Estuary configuration-Open channel.

In addition, the existing usage with the same loads remains the same.

The port will serve the energy sector

It is emphasised that the port will serve additional hydrocarbon vessels and in general the energy sector in the region (Cyprus, Israel and Egypt mainly), as well as vessels with cargoes of third parties involved in development programs in the region.

In addition, in the future, open and closed storage areas will be created for temporary storage of cargo, but also for the medium and long-term needs of companies in relation to import cargo and for the needs of cargo in transit.

There will still be occasional docking of ships with the only activity being the change of crews or the change of flag and the receipt of supplies for the needs of the ships.

During the construction stage, it is estimated that approximately 100 people will be employed until the end of the work, while 45 people are estimated to be employed due to the expansion of the port, during its operation. Accordingly, during the operation phase, it is estimated that an average of 27 people will be employed.
