Limassol transportation is changing- Funding of the metaCCAZE project has been approved

Another step has been taken towards the realisation of Limassol Municipality’s objective to make the city climate-neutral by 2030 within the framework of the 100 Climate Neutral and Smart cities of the European Mission (EU Cities Mission). Financing has been approved for the metaCCAZE project, which starts on 1 January, 2024.

As part of the project, the Municipality of Limassol together with other local partners will implement a series of measures aimed at improving traffic congestion and reducing the use of private vehicles.

The measures for Limassol within the framework of the metaCCAZE project include:

- The construction of two mobility hubs (modern spaces with facilities, which offer citizens the possibility to park their cars in peripheral points and continue their movement with public buses, bicycles, or scooters towards the city centre).

- The provision of an on-demand service for the transportation of gymnasium and lyceum pupils to extracurricular activities. Pupils and their parents will be able to use an app to call mini-buses that will be used exclusively by pupils to travel to and from their extracurricular activities. The platform that will be developed will use Artificial Intelligence, so that it finds the optimal routes for pupils.

- The provision of a platform to schools, so that those parents can transport more pupils to school by car, so as to avoid traffic congestion around the schools at the beginning and end of classes.

- The further development and upgrading with smart systems of the Limassol Buses EMEL and NEXTBIKE fleet.

All these actions will be developed through close cooperation with citizens and local and state agencies, so that the Municipality of Limassol can ensure that the measures implemented meet the needs of the citizens.

Limassol is a beacon city in the metaCCAZE project. The Municipality of Limassol is in charge of the actions in Limassol, with a total budget of €1,099,912.50 for four years. The five partners from Limassol (Limassol Municipality, MaaSLab, EMEL, NEXTBIKE, Oxygono) have a total budget of approximately €5,000,000 for the implementation of the actions in Limassol.

More generally, metaCCAZE aims to implement in 4 European beacon cities (Amsterdam, Munich, Limassol, Taberre), solutions that will reduce emissions from traffic and transport. These solutions are then transferred and implemented in 6 other European cities (Athens, Krakow, Malta, Misklots, Milan, Paris).
