We support innovative entrepreneurship, Innovation Deputy Ministry official tells World Summit

Cyprus supports initiatives aimed at promoting innovative entrepreneurship to accelerate the digital transition at a global level, said the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Permanent Secretary Dr. Stelios Chimonas.

He was representing Cyprus at a Ministerial Conference within the framework of the World Summit on the Information Society Forum (WSIS 2023) organized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), on 15 March, in Geneva.

According to a press release by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, discussions focused on the role of Information and Communication Technologies as driving forces for accelerating the achievement of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

At the same time, participants exchanged views and best practices about the Global Digital Compass, a set of principles and policies that will govern the building of a digital future that is safe and beneficial for all.

It is also noted that in the context of the Summit, the proposal for the creation of an Alliance of Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Digital Development, a network of states and organizations that will support the efforts of national ecosystems to develop the capabilities necessary to lead the new digital environment, was discussed.

According to the press release, in his intervention Chimonas underlined that Cyprus supports initiatives aimed at promoting innovative entrepreneurship to accelerate the digital transition at global level. In particular, he referred to important policies and reforms that Cyprus has implemented in recent years to create an environment favourable and friendly to entrepreneurship and investment and in direct relation to the objectives of the national digital agenda.

It is added that Dr. Chimonas, among others, explained the importance of developing resilient digital infrastructures and ensuring universal access to high-speed internet connections for a sustainable and fair digital transition.
