National Council to convene on 30 March

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the Cyprus issue, will convene on Thursday, 30 March. It will be the NC’s first meeting under the newly-elected President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

During the meeting, Christodoulides will brief the Council members about the results of his contacts during his official visit to Greece, the talks he had last week in Nicosia with the UN Under-Secretary-General, Rosemary DiCarlo, and the meetings he will have this week on the sidelines of the European Council meeting in Brussels. He will also inform them about his participation in the European People's Party (EPP) summit.

Christodoulides will with meet with the heads of the EU institutions in the Belgian capital on Wednesday, namely the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, European Council President Charles Michel, and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.

Also, as Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis told CNA, the President will also have meetings with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, whose country currently holds the Presidency of the EU, and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz. Christodoulides is also hoping to speak with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will be in Brussels to meet with the heads of the EU countries.

Christodoulides’ meeting with the EPP – where he will lobby for his proposal to achieve a more active involvement of the EU in the Cyprus peace process – will take place ahead of the EC meeting, on Thursday 23 March.
