SYNLAB Cyprus: We offer local access drawing from our international expertise

Polis Georghiades, CEO of SYNLAB Cyprus, reveals the multidisciplinary spectrum of tests on offer at the international lab, in Biochemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, Virology, Allergies, as well as in more specialised areas such as Molecular and Genetics. He also reveals the company’s plans to increase the its external quality controls and replace all equipment before the end of 2024 with the latest technology.
Can you tell us more about your company, when you were established in Cyprus and how many offices / members of staff you currently have?
SYNLAB Cyprus, a member of SYNLAB international, listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange, is the largest private laboratory in Europe, with a prominent position in the medical field of Cyprus as well. We cover a wide range of laboratory tests of over 5,000 different parameters for patients and partners. We offer a multidisciplinary spectrum of tests in Biochemistry, Immunology, Endocrinology, Virology, Allergies, as well as in more specialised areas such as Molecular and Genetics.
The foundation of the services provided is the Accreditation of our laboratories. Specifically, SYNLAB Cyprus is an accredited laboratory according to the International and European Standard CYS EN ISO 15189:2012 for medical laboratories by the Cyprus Organisation for the Promotion of Quality.
As a well-structured organisation, SYNLAB Cyprus has distinct operational departments: Sample & Patient admin, Logistics, Laboratory, Accounting, Medical Representatives and Management. SYNLAB Cyprus currently employs more than 100 healthcare professionals with scientific expertise, experience and commitment.
Our clientele consists of patients and medical professionals: companies and organisations including on site SYNLAB laboratories at prominent hospitals like Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre and Apollonion Hospital. Our patients are served in a friendly and comfortable environment, offering personalised care and medical counselling. We perform successful blood collections also in children and additionally offer home-service blood collection with experienced staff trained in difficult cases, such as immunosuppressed or immobile patients.
What do you believe sets your company apart from its competition?
SYNLAB combines the benefits of a European-wide network with the advantages of a local diagnostic services provider, offering local access and personal counsel to our customers while at the same time drawing from the breadth and depth of SYNLAB’s international expertise.
How has your experience of doing business in Cyprus been and would you recommend it to other foreign interest companies looking to relocate?
In spite of the small size of Cyprus’ market which has an impact not only in volumes but also on the way and mentality of entrepreneurship, Cyprus is still an attractive place to operate as a European country in the middle East area.
What is your view of your sector (locally and on a global level) both as it is today and its potential for growth?
The heath sector in Cyprus is at infant stage, especially after the introduction of the new National Health system which changed the terms of operating in this new era. Being a major player in this infant stage means that you’re faced with all challenges and its consequences but you are part of decision making that will form the health industry.
Where do you see your company in five years? Are there any immediate plans for your company you can reveal to us, for example new products, services, plans for expansion?
SYNLAB Cyprus, with its current prominent position, is obliged, and is always top priority, not just to maintain but to enhance the quality in all services provided. As such we plan to increase our external quality controls and replace all our equipment before the end of 2024 with the latest technology.
By the end of 2023, SYNLAB will have another on site laboratory at the new developed “EL GRECO Hospital” located in Strovolos Nicosia.
How much focus do you put on CSR and being part of the local community?
CSR plays an important role in SYNLAB’s activities both locally but also globally.
Locally, SYNLAB Cyprus is participating in numerous campaigns that aim to support health prevention for all, including campaigns run by the Rheumatism association and PASYKAF. On a global basis, SYNLAB international has played a significant role in supporting refugees and providing shelter to refugees from Ukraine war.
