Gender equality high on government agenda

President Nikos Christodoulides said that issues of gender equality are high on his administration’s political agenda, in a message to mark International Women’s Day.

He said he was fully aware of the problems faced by women, which is why his governance programme includes specific policies and actions to prevent and combat violence against women, reconcile family and professional life, reduce the pay gap and promote equal treatment in all areas of life.

This year's International Women's Day is dedicated to innovation and technology for gender equality and within this context, and given the low representation of women in innovation and technology, at the initiative of the Commissioner for Gender Equality and in collaboration with the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation, the government is proceeding to establish 10 scholarships for Cypriot women.

The President notes that today is a day of honor and reflection for the sacrifices and battles that women around the world have given to obtain their rights.
