Telethon: Raising hundreds of thousands for patients and research

The funds collected annually by TELETHON Cyprus play a critical role in supporting research programmes at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING) and assisting individuals with muscular dystrophy. TELETHON was introduced in Cyprus in 1994, and in recent years, it has managed to raise approximately €300,000 annually.

These funds are essential as they bring significant and measurable results, as seen in 2022 when CING announced the discovery by its neuroimmunology research team of new biomarker molecules for the study of multiple sclerosis and their impact on the clinical profile of patients. This research was funded by TELETHON, and the results were published in the international scientific journal Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders.

Equally important is the financial support that TELETHON offers to its co-organiser, the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA Cyprus). The MDA uses the proceeds of TELETHON to provide services and benefits to its members and their families in order to improve their quality of life. Indicatively, these benefits include, the psychological support service, social service, financial support for physiotherapy, speech therapy and hydrotherapy, the loan of technological medical equipment (such as oxygen and suction devices), and many other services.

TELETHON Cyprus organises various events annually, some with significant financial contributions and others with smaller yet equally essential ones. This is because, in addition to the funds, informing the public about TELETHON’s work and collaborating with social organisations is critical. For example, on Sunday, April 23, TELETHON is organising the 5th Futsal Tournament, at G.C. School in Nicosia, with co-organisers the Cyprus Police Association. All funds from the event will go towards the charity efforts of CING and the MDA Cyprus.

In 2022, the futsal event gathered 3361 euros. The event has been put under the auspices of the Cyprus Police Chief Mr Stelios Papatheodorou.

OPAP Cyprus is TELETHON’s big sponsor. Supporters of the futsal event are the Cyprus Police, the Cyprus Fire Service, the Cyprus Football Association, Coca Cola Cyprus, Kerlengou Bakeries and Global College. G.C. School are event hosts. Media sponsors IN Business, REPORTER and CBN.
