Boutique hotel in the historic Lyssarides Building to open soon
08:31 - 26 April 2023
Situated in the heart of Nicosia, a new boutique hotel in the historic Lyssarides Building will soon be welcoming its first guests.
Situated on Constantinos Palaiologos Street in Old Nicosia, Gate Twenty Two Boutique Hotel is anticipated to open in mid-May.
The hotel has 32 rooms (standard, superior, and deluxe) and is anticipated to attract guests looking for a short break in the capital or travelling for business. It is understood there will be special weekend rates.
The building’s renovation was undertaken by Oikogenesis, following an agreement with EDEK for the structure to be leased for 99 years.
As well as a lobby restaurant, the new hotel also has a rooftop bar restaurant on the eighth floor, providing a stunning panoramic view of Nicosia. An à la carte breakfast will also be served there.
The building’s renovation included making the structure safer in the event of an earthquake as well as maintenance and cleaning of the exterior stone, as well as its complete transformation into a hotel.
Care was taken not to negatively impact the building’s exterior or the special character its presence adds to the surrounding area.
Lyssarides, who died in April 2021 shortly before his 101st birthday, was a Cypriot politician and physician who was a central figure in the politics of Cyprus after the island's independence. He founded EDEK, the first socialist political party in Cyprus, in 1969.
One of the first high-rise buildings in Nicosia, the Lyssarides Building was designed in the late 1950s by the architect Loukas Hadjilouka at Lyssarides's request.
The project was licensed in 1957 with construction beginning immediately. The building originally housed Lyssarides’ office, before becoming EDEK’s headquarters in 1969.
The building housed refugees in 1974 and, 10 years later, underwent its first modernization by the architect Minas Zannetto. It was then rented to the Municipality of Nicosia to house its technical services, which remained there until 2018. Lyssarides bequeathed the building to his party.
