2023 sCYence Fair: Cyprus a regional centre for research and innovation

The Cyprus Institute and the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute launched “2023 sCYence Fair” on Wednesday, following its previous three very successful editions.

The opening ceremony was attended among other by the Deputy Minister of Research and Innovation, Philippos Hadjizacharias, who said that Cyprus, with the contribution of its students, has been emerging as a regional centre of research, innovation and entrepreneurship and a competitive and productive economy, based on knowledge and excellence.

He also said that it provides solutions to global environmental, economic and social challenges. Hailing the sCYence Fair as a “pioneering institution that inspires young people to explore the exciting world of science and technology”, the deputy minister said such initaitives “contribute significantly to building the research, innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem that we want, adding that Cyprus has high-quality human resources”.

He said that it should come as no surprise that it Cyprus ranked 10th in the European Innovation Scoreboard for the year 2022, moving to the category, “Strong Innovators” and registering the greatest improvement in performance across Europe.

Hadjizacharias assured that the government will provide the students with conditions and opportunities that will allow them to further develop their creativity and initiatives.

He also said that the students are called to play a leading role in achieving a sustainable, green and digital future, and assured that the state will be by their side at every step.

According to the organisers, “sCYence Fair” aims to stimulate scientific interest and to encourage participation by young students and support the next generation of scientists from Cyprus. “The event provides an opportunity for our young scientists to increase their awareness of the wonders of science, add to their knowledge, and broaden their scientific horizons. Students will get the chance to demonstrate their scientific projects to the public, attend related lectures, and enter a contest for the best presentation.”

The fair’s programme includes an exhibition entitled "Women of Mathematics from around the world; A gallery of Portraits" at our premises, until April the 24th. The exhibition will be highlighted at our science festival “sCYence Fair” on Wednesday, 5th of April.
