President meets with German Chancellor on 25 May

President Nikos Christodoulides will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during an official visit to Berlin on 25 May, Deputy Spokesperson of the German Federal Government Christiane Hoffmann said.

She said the President will be received with military honours and that a joint press conference will follow the meeting Scholz. The agenda will include bilateral, international and European policy issues.

Asked if Germany could play a mediating role in resolving the Cyprus issue, Hoffmann said she did not wish to prejudge the content of the talks; though she pointed out that the German government has been making efforts to find a solution for a while now.

Meanwhile, during a press briefing, Spokesman of the German Foreign Ministry Christopher Burger was asked whether the German government envisages a solution of "one Cyprus or two".

He said Germany's position has not changed, and that Berlin has supported the efforts of the United Nations and rejected mediation from other sides for a two-state solution.

Burger added that there are UN Security Council parameters for the solution of the Cyprus issue. In essence, he said, they refer to a bizonal-bicommunal federation with political equality, recalling that this was first formulated in resolution 716/91 of the UNSC.

He went on to say that there are also six previous UNSC resolutions on the Cyprus issue, on which the above resolution is based, and that this position was confirmed this year by the UNSC with resolution 26/74 of 2023, where it refers to a solution based on a bizonal -bicommunal federation with political equality.
