Global language learning app and e-learning platform Preply has identified Nicosia as the third-best city for a 'workation' among 74 locations around the world.
Preply said it conducted a study comparing 74 cities around the world to find out which ones are most worth living and working in to create its ‘Workation Index.’ The term ‘workation’ refers to spending time in a new location while continuing to work remotely full-time, to better fit in leisure activities when you are off the clock. Preply describes it as “a hybrid of work and vacation.”
As noted by the company, which is based in the US but has employees in 30 countries across Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and Asia, Nicosia follows only Brisbane (Australia) and Lisbon (Portugal).
The rest of the top 10 is made up of Taipei (Taiwan), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Helsinki (Finland), Vienna (Austria), Auckland (New Zealand), Ottawa (Canada), and Reykjavik (Iceland).
The company said it look at four criteria when compiling its list, English language proficiency, climate and environment, affordable housing, and human rights.
“The trend toward remote work is here to stay, and companies and job seekers alike can benefit from it. Though this shift carries advantages and disadvantages, it’s a dream come true for many who work digitally,” Preply notes.
Preply’s platform enables its 40,000+ tutors to work “whenever and wherever they want,” the company says, adding, “We’ve personally experienced the benefits of remote work and are proud to offer people worldwide the opportunity to take on a job within the digital world. This way, once offline, they can live, travel, and explore anywhere.”
This inspired Preply to conduct the study that asked the following question, ‘What are the best cities in the world to work remotely (in)?’ The 74 cities across the globe were analyzed according to ten factors across three categories, ‘Quality of Life,’ ‘Climate and Environment,’ and ‘Costs and Safety.’ The data collected was then transferred into a scoring system to compare all cities equally. If you add the points for all ten criteria, you get a ranking for the best cities to Workation in.
