Energy Minister visits Israel to talk natural gas

Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou travels to Israel on 14 June to discuss the prospects for importing natural gas and creating the necessary infrastructure to store it and perhaps even export it.

Papanastasiou also plans to discuss the dispute over the “Aphrodite” reservoir in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone and Israel’s “Yishai”, at a meeting with his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz.

Papanastasiou’s visit to the neighbouring country follows a workshop that was held in Nicosia in late May over the construction of a pipeline to transport natural gas quantities from the Israeli gas fields to Cyprus; both for electricity generation as well as possible exports to international markets via an LNG terminal.

According to a press release by the Ministry, Papanastasiou will have a one-on-one meeting with Katz before the two countries delegations meet to “discuss alternative solutions for the transport of natural gas from the Eastern Mediterranean to Cyprus for electricity generation and exports to international markets”.

The agenda also includes consultations to conclude on a bilateral agreement of cooperation for the construction of infrastructure linking the two counties both with a natural gas pipeline as well as a power cable, the Ministry added.

The two delegations will then discuss the negotiating timeframe concerning the dispute over Aphrodite and adjacent “Yishai”.
