Government employment declined by 2% in June

Total government employment in June 2023 dropped by an annual 2%, driven downwards the transfer of Hourly Paid Workers from the Ministry of Health to the State Health Services Organisation, which is included in the Broad Public Sector, as of January 2023.

According to data released by CySTAT, in absolute terms, total government employment in June 2023 declined by 1,050 persons to 52,424 persons.

Of the total persons employed in the government in June 2023, 25,215 were permanent employees, 20,400 were casual staff and 6,809 were hourly-paid workers.

Permanent staff decreased by 735 persons or by 2.8%, to 25,215 persons, whereas casual staff increased by 1,420 persons or by 7.5%), reaching 20,400.

The main changes were registered in permanent Civil and Educational Service staff which declined by 2.9% year on year, while casual Educational Service staff rose by 9.1%.

Hourly-paid workers in June declined by 20.3%, Cystat added.

Compared to May 2023, total government employment increased by 0.4%, with the largest increase registered in casual staff of the Security Forces with 1.3%.
