Stano: EU ready for active role in Cyprus solution

There is no alternative to a solution based on a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, and the EU is ready to support all stages of the UN process, European Commission spokesperson for external affairs Peter Stano told the Cyprus News Agency in a written statement, responding to a question on the role that the EU can have in restarting negotiations.

“The EU is fully committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, in accordance with the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions and in line with the EU acquis and the principles on which the EU is founded,” Stano said.

“There is no alternative to it. The EU remains ready to play an active role in supporting all stages of the UN-led process, with all appropriate means at its disposal, as underlined in the Conclusions of the European Council of June 2023,” he added.
