The tripling of the size of the existing harbour in Latsi and future provision for cruise ships mooring, among other things, have been provided for in an agreement signed by the Cyprus Ports Authority and the TRiTON S.A. Consulting Engineers and I.A.CO Environmental & Water Consultants Ltd consortium for preparation of a study and plans for the development of the Port of Latsi.
The offer to the contracting consortium was awarded after an open tender process with the upgrade and changes anticipated to cost €45 million.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Ports Authority Antonis St. Stylianou stated that the investment of €45 million in the port of Latsi is one of Authority’s largest investments in terms of equity capital.
As he explained, it includes the tripling of the existing port, adding 350 new berths based on modern international berthing and berthing standards. It will also create additional land areas and facilities, with the new design providing for future provision for the mooring of cruise ships on the outside of the windward breakwater, while it will upgrade the port product provided by the Cyprus Ports Authority in the area.
At the same time, he noted, it will bring about positive benefits to the local community and, above all, it will be the first completely green development in a port facility in Cyprus. The first green port in Cyprus will be created, taking into account the new port realities at a European and global level, with full respect for the coastal and marine environment.
On behalf of the leadership of the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Manager of the Port of Limassol Panayiotis Agathocleous referred to the significant value of the expansion of the port of Latsi project in the context of the strategic development of the Cyprus Ports Authority, focusing on the sustainability of the project, but also on the multiple benefits for the wider region.
As he said, the project contributes to the consolidation of the operational activity of the Ports Authority, providing increased port services in a model port project, with respect to the particularly important neighboring area, while supporting the economic development and well-being of the local community, while at the same time contributing to the development of domestic coastal tourism.
On behalf of the contracting consortium, Drs. Ioannis Sioris, TRiTON Consulting Engineers and Ayis I. Iakovides, I.A.CO Ltd Environmental & Water Consultants, in turn expressed their full readiness to implement the project in accordance with the terms and conditions set by the Cyprus Ports Authority, as well as their certainty that the project will be implemented within the timetables provided for in the agreement.
