Scorching temperatures continue to affect Cyprus

Extremely high temperatures continue to affect Cyprus with the level of risk of forest fires remaining at “code red.”

The Department of Meteorology issued a new yellow warning for extremely high temperatures valid until 6pm local time on 25 July. The temperature is expected to reach 41 degrees Celsius inland, 39 degrees Celsius over the southern coastal areas, and around 33 degrees Celsius over the higher mountainous areas.

The Forestry Department in a press release informs the public that on 25 July, the risk of forest fires will remain on “Red Alert”.

The Department recalled that lighting of fire without a permit is prohibited and constitutes an offence which, according to the Law on Forests could lead to imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both while the Prevention of Fires in the Countryside Law, provides for up to 5 years imprisonment or a fine of up to €20,000, or both.
