Dismantling of Larnaca gas installations continues

The removal of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) installations from the Larnaca seafront is moving ahead towards the completion of the years-long process.

Once rehabilitated, the area is anticipated to be a prime location for the fuirther development of the Larnaca area.

A written announcement by the Municipality of Larnaca has stated that "permits for the dismantling of the Synergas and Intergas companies’ gas facilities of the will soon be issued and the process of remediation of the area's soil will follow".

It is added that "after procedures that lasted for years, the issue of achieving the relocation of the oil and gas facilities from the Larnaca coastal front, their removal and the sanitation of the area's soil is nearing completion. With the completion of the relevant procedures, Larnaca is being freed from a serious risk that existed precisely because of the specific facilities."

In May, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyrasconfirmed that Seveso II Directive status, indicating an area was contaminated by dangerous substances, no longer applies to the seafront area that housed the gas installations, as well as oil refineries.

Vyras continued that the removal of the facilities opened the way for new development and investment in Larnaca.

What Vyras described as the largest property owner in the area was anticipated to submit an application for a Master Plan soon, he added.

“The first developments will begin in a year or two and there has been great interest in them. However, these developments have to be done properly,” Vyras said in May, noting this included ensuring all relevant environmental factors were taken into account.
