The million-euro projects upgrading the Municipality of Dromolaxia - Meneou

Projects worth millions of euros have been implemented and are in the process of being implemented in the Municipality of Dromolaxia-Meneou in the district of Larnaca, the Mayor of Dromolaxia-Meneou Kypros Andronikou has told CNA, adding that they include the Municipal Library and the Multipurpose Centre.

He added that "among the projects that have been completed is that of the reconstruction of the central core of Dromolaxia, with the flow of traffic which had been interrupted for several months due to the works, now back to normal."

According to Andronikou, the redevelopment included the creation of a square and the installation of paving, cables, etc. connected to services being installed underground, and the installation of urban equipment, a project that, together with the parking area, cost around €1.2 million.

Currently, he continued, "The project of renovation, expansion, and energy upgrade of the Municipal Building is in the final stage."

Recently, Andronikou said, "Contracts were signed for the creation of a parking space for 30-35 cars, by the Town Hall, while in September the works for its construction, to serve the public, will begin."

According to Andronikou, "Tenders were also announced for the creation of a Municipal Library, which will serve both our Municipality and the one that will result from the mergers in June 2024."

The Library will be housed in a modern building of the former Dromolaxia Co-op, which came into the ownership of the Municipality after several struggles, he said.

Answering a related question, the Mayor said that "there will be books in the building, but it will also function as an electronic library with spaces for children, teenagers, and adults. At the same time, there will be spaces for lectures, book presentations, exhibitions, seminars, and other events, while the work on the project is expected to start in October."

He also mentioned that "another project that is being planned is the Multipurpose Centre in Meneu, the tenders for which have already been announced, with a cost of around two million euros. The Centre will provide alternative forms of healthy ways for young people and others to spend their time since the organised groups of the Municipality will be able to use it for their various activities, as it has several rooms."

There is also a room with a capacity of about 250 people for holding lectures, seminars, and other events. The project is financed by European Funds and specifically by the European Thalia Program," said Andronikou expressing at the same time his satisfaction with the success of this funding since, as he explained, "the two million euros is an extremely large amount for the Municipality of Dromolaxia - Meneou."

Responding to another question, he answered that "several other small projects are running at the same time, such as the creation of a park with multiple play equipment and other games for children in a new residential area located behind the old Dromolaxia cemetery. We believe that the creation of this particular park will serve young families and their children who live in the area, offering them relaxation and play."

He also noted that "contracts were also signed for the creation of a Memorial to the Fallen of the Dromolaxia Community, in the vicinity of the old Timiou Prodromou church, and work will soon begin. The restoration work of the old church of Timiou Prodromou is also underway and we have already spoken with the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafiadis, in order for the church to be included in the Department of Antiquities, with the aim of restoring it to its original form since it is a very old church with a magnificent bell tower and other elements."    

According to the Mayor, "At the same time, work continues on the restoration of the small church of Ayios Andronikos and Athanasia in Meneou, with the Municipality contributing to the landscaping of the surrounding areas."

"All these works will highlight both the specific church and the old church of Timiou Prodromou and will make them more beautiful and visitable as we will restore them to their original form and they will be an ornament for the Municipality of Dromolaxia - Meneou," he concluded.
