International distinction for CUT academic

A Cypriot academic has been given the 1st Young Scientist Award by the International Society for Digital Earth’s (ISDE) Young Scientist Innovation Network (YSIN).

Dr. Athos Agapiou is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT).

The award ceremony took place the Beijing Friendship Hotel in Beijing, as part of the ‘1st Youth Innovation Forum on Digital Earth’ earlier this August.

In his short speech at the ceremony, Dr. Agapiou thanked the Innovation Network of Scientists, the International Society for Digital Earth, as well as all his collaborators for their long-term cooperation in his research. Dr. Agapiou’s research activity focuses on the utilisation of modern space and earth observation technologies for the study and monitoring of archaeological sites and monuments and for the identification of underground archaeological remains.

The Young Scientists Award has been established to recognise and honor outstanding young scientists who are active in the field of Digital Earth and who develop innovative research ideas that improve society and the environment.

The selection criteria for the award include the evaluation of the scientific achievements of young researchers under the age of 45, as well as their scientific excellence and innovation in the field of Digital Earth.

Dr. Agapiou obtained his diploma from the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (2005). Two years later, in 2007, he obtained an MSc in Geoinformatics from the same university. He also holds an MΑ from the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus (2010), while, in 2013, he received his PhD in the field of Remote Sensing Archaeology.
