The Cyprus Port and Marine Police (Coast Guard) has received three new fast patrol vessels from the Croatian shipbuilder Tehnomont.
The first boat, named Kyrenia (Patrol Vessel; PV 31), was launched in May 2023 and the other two, Kantara (PV 32) in June and Pentadaktylos (PV 33) in August, from the company's shipyard in Pula.
Tehnomont Shipyard Pula Ltd is listed as the leading Croatian shipyard of medium dimensions, and one of the leading builders of aluminium ships on the Croatian market. The shipyard, which has some 150 employees, will also deliver two 25-meter firefighting vessels to Greece by the end of the year.
The 18-metre aluminium patrol boats project was developed by Camarc Design, UK, which has also developed the new 25-metre firefighting vessels for the Hellenic Fire Service, which are currently under construction in Pula.
A tender for the supply of the three patrol boats that was announced in 2020 was eventually awarded to a consortium of Iskra Shipyard doo Šibenik and Tehnomont Pula, with a value of €7.5 million.
The design's exact overall length is 17.6 meters, the beam 4.7m and the draught 1.6m. The engines are two MTU V8 of 896 kW each (1,200hp x 2). There are also two 20kW electric generators. The boats are also equipped with a bow thruster and a fly-bridge.
The patrol vessel achieves a speed higher than 34 knots. The working speed is 27 knots. The crew are 4-6 people. The armament consists of two machine guns.
The vessels are intended for patrolling and rescue operations in an area up to 150 nautical miles from the coast of Cyprus, and the specifics include high speed and a low noise level, only 65 decibels at maximum speed. The ships are equipped with two SIMRAD state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment, as well as a FLIR thermal camera with excellent characteristics.
The sponsor of the first boat, Kyrenia, was Gordana Deranja, the director of Tehnomont, who wished the ship good seas after the traditional champagne splash on the ship's side.
