What it’s like to work at Medicover Genetics

“At Medicover Genetics, we place a strong emphasis on fostering the professional growth of our employees and enabling their upward mobility within the company. As a forward-looking healthcare company, we prioritise the wellbeing of our employees by supporting their safety, health and productivity. Only then can we engage, evolve, excel and grow to do more together,” says Evie Mallouri, Administration Director at Medicover Genetics.

Medicover Genetics Cyprus (formerly known as NIPD Genetics), was founded in 2010 as the first biotechnology startup company in Cyprus. Following its recent acquisition by Medicover, Medicover Genetics is a leading European biotechnology company specialising in genetic medicine, with more than 25 years of experience in genetics diagnostics.

The company’s diverse multidisciplinary team comprises 145 professionals of diverse backgrounds and expertise. With a focus on workforce diversity within the scope of ‘Mind the Gap’, Medicover Genetics ensures a gender-balanced representation in leadership and decision-making roles. “Furthermore, we are dedicated to bridging multigenerational differences by engaging a multi-generational workforce,” Mallouri tells GOLD. “These principles are evident through the diverse age groups represented among our employees and the balanced gender representation across all levels.”

Professional growth comes from exposing oneself to new ideas and perspectives. Medicover Genetics knows this, which is why its employees participate in specialised international and local conferences and training sessions. The company provides subscriptions and memberships to professional and scientific media and tutorials, offering insights on the latest industry trends and advancements. “We focus on nurturing skills such as emotional intelligence, adept communication, problem-solving and promoting mental wellness. These investments amplify self-development, productivity, long-term engagement, and progression,” the Administration Director explains.

At Medicover Genetics, cultivating a culture of trust is a fundamental pillar to fostering a thriving workplace environment and being transparent is key. Additionally, Mallouri points out that vertical and horizontal collaboration is deeply ingrained in the company’s culture and is necessary by the very nature of its work and service. “Cross-functional teams often collaborate on various projects, where diverse skills and perspectives converge to drive innovation. Our collaborative approach extends beyond department boundaries, promoting knowledge sharing and a collective drive to achieve our mission of advancing healthcare,” she says.

Happiness and loyalty are the by-products of a trusting environment and loyal employees are the backbone of a successful business. In this regard, it is important to point out two impressive strategic elements implemented by Medicover Genetics. Firstly, employees are encouraged to discuss their needs with HR, which strives to provide optimal and personalised assistance. Secondly, company policies encourage open communication among managers and team members to set realistic expectations and avoid burnout. The parent company, Medicover, has implemented a group whistleblower channel that allows anonymous and non-anonymous reports. This approach allows the management of risks and crises and effectively addresses potential serious misconduct. “We utilise employee surveys to collect insights spanning different dimensions of the employee work journey,” Mallouri enthuses. “Moreover, we have set up suggestion boxes in common areas for the employees to submit their suggestions, either in name or anonymously; these suggestions are recorded and discussed and feedback is provided.”

As Mallouri makes clear, employees feel sheltered and appreciated, thanks to both tangible and non-tangible incentives. While employees enjoy various bonding activities initiated by the company, they are also rewarded financially for their good work – a factor of high importance in such turbulent and uncertain times. “Medicover Genetics’ employees have the option to participate in the Provident Fund, to which the company contributes an additional percentage of their salary. Moreover, a corporate booklet of discount benefits provides a range of attractive offers, including discounts on vacations, amusement parks, and more, and all employees can undergo specialized genetic tests either free of charge or at a discounted rate,” says Mallouri.

By nurturing employees with respect and appreciation, a company can clearly demonstrate its corporate values and what it stands for. In the case of Medicover Genetics, it means employee satisfaction, pushing boundaries and shattering glass ceilings.
