Kissonerga: First substantial step taken towards creation of marina

Kissonerga Community Council has welcomed the completion of the first stage of the tender process to find consultants to prepare the terms of tender for a marina in Kissonerga, although this is essentially only the first step in the lengthy construction process of the project.

The head of the Kissonerga’s Community Council, Giorgos Stylianou, told CNA that this was the first substantial step in the whole process and reminded that, after the consulting firm that will prepare the documents for the tender announcement is selected, and given that there will be no objections and legal disputes, then the work will be awarded the successful consultancy.

After the offer is awarded to the consulting firm, they will be given a window of time to prepare the terms of the offers, he added.

This, Stulianou said, is expected to be done before the end of 2024. Even if the terms are prepared and tenders for the construction of the marina are created around the end of 2024, time should be given to the interested entrepreneurs to prepare their bid/proposal while, additionally, time will be needed for them to be evaluated.

Stylianou emphasised that, given these facts, the construction of the marina in Kissonerga is not expected to begin before the end of 2025.

Nevertheless, the Kissonerga Community Council considers the completion of this first stage to be a positive development and hopes that this time the marina project will go ahead and that the government,t if and when needed, will show what was described as the political courage required to complete the project, especially in regarding the management of objections and appeals.

Unfortunately, Stylianou noted, appeals made in the previous tender announcement caused a delay of more than 15 years. This has delayed the plans for the development of Kissonerga concerning the construction of breakwaters in the 'Potima' area to protect the coastline from erosion and the parallel development of the beach front of the community, he concluded.
