Growing Cyprus University of Technology to introduce Shipping Department
06:16 - 06 January 2024
Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) Rector Panayiotis Zaphiris has characterised 2023 as a year of catalytic achievements for the University, with the expansion to Paphos as a pivotal point, following the establishment of the new Faculty of Tourism Management, Hospitality, and Entrepreneurship there.
At the same time, a new Department of Shipping, within the Faculty of Management and Economics, is being established in Limassol within the year, while a study into establishing a Faculty of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development in Larnaca is underway, an initiative that will contribute to the development of marine sciences and sustainable development.
The Cyprus University of Technology has grown in recent years, perhaps most significantly in 2023 since its establishment, due to the simultaneous establishment of a new Faculty, two academic Departments, and an Academy.
The new Faculty of Tourism Management, Hospitality, and Entrepreneurship housed in Paphos (main photo) since September 2023 includes the Department of Management, Entrepreneurship, and Digital Business, the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism that will offer professional training programmes for food and other related professions.
"Tourism is one of the main pillars of our national economy and the local economy of the city of Paphos, and the establishment of the Faculty of Tourism contributes in the best way to the scientific upgrading of the sector and the interconnection of education with the needs of the labor market," the Rector underlined in a post on X.
New Department is welcoming students from September
With the six existing Faculties remaining in Limassol, a new Shipping Department is being established within the Faculty of Management and Economics.
According to Zaphiris, in September 2024 CUT will welcome the first students in this new department.
"Limassol is one of the world's leading ship management centres and the shipping sector is one of the city's most important sectors of economic activity,” the Rector underlined.
It is emphasised that the new Department will offer opportunities for the development of research partnerships with shipping companies to address the changing needs of the sector, contributing towards making Limassol even more of a European shipping hub.
Department of Shipping
The newly established Shipping Department, part of the Faculty of Management and Economics, is being established in Limassol within the year and will offer its first purely maritime-oriented study programmes in the 2024-2025 academic year.
While the Department of Shipping is newly established, shipping studies have been part of the Cyprus University of Technology since its foundation. This has been acknowledged through the excellent results obtained by its graduates and the respect CUT’s shipping studies has earned from the local sector.
As the only public university offering what CUT describes as unrivaled quality education in shipping, supply chain logistics and transport, the Department of Shipping is in a position to capitalise on emerging external opportunities to strengthen its position and create added value for students, graduates and also all the interested parties with whom it works.
Poised for the next major leap in its growth, the Department and its members are open to dialogue with all stakeholders on how mutual value can be created in this ever-evolving field.
In addition, CUT is willing to provide evidence-based support to the relevant government agencies for the development and implementation of holistic and integrated maritime policies, which will have a positive impact on the national economy, since the maritime sector is constantly booming and will always be a key pillar of the Cypriot and international economy.
The Shipping Department's curriculum focuses specifically on the Maritime sector, offering a purely Maritime-oriented degree.
The study programme in question is unique, innovative in terms of design, of high quality and the only one offered by a public University in Cyprus, giving the opportunity to Cypriot or Greek students to study one of the largest and constantly evolving sectors of the Cypriot economy, CUT underlines.
The programme is also described as being unique in its field and possibly at a European level, as it is designed to meet the needs of students, as well as employers of the domestic and foreign shipping industry, by offering innovative and well-designed courses exclusively related to shipping.
The programme, in addition, aims to develop students' ability to analyse, understand and evaluate various topics related to the operation of international maritime trade and shipping markets, capital management, maritime risk management, and transport and supply chain management, CUT says.
