Environmental Commissioner Maria Panagiotou becomes new Minister of Agriculture

Maria Panagiotou, until now the Enviromental Commisioner, has been named the new Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, succeeding Petros Xenophontos.

Panagiotou’s new position came as part of the government reshuffle.

Panagiotou was born in Larnaca in 1982.

She studied History and Archeology at the University of Cyprus from where she graduated with honours in 2004. In 2006 she completed her postgraduate studies at the University of Birmingham where she obtained the MPhil (B) title in Modern East Mediterranean History. In 2017 she was awarded a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Cyprus.

In March 2023, Panagiotou was appointed Environmental Commissioner.

She was the Head of EDEK’s Press Office and the party's Press Representative from March 2016 to February 2023.

From 2004 to 2022, Panagiotou worked on more than seven research projects, co-financed by the European Development Funds, the University of Cyprus, the Research Promotion Foundation and the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, where she gained significant experience in archival research and research management programmes.

She was also employed as a member of the Scientific Team of the University of Cyprus for the Cyprus File project for the period 2007-2010. Between 2017 and 2022, Panagiotou worked as a Specialist Scientist teaching economic history at the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Cyprus.

She has published more than 16 scientific articles in mixed volumes and international scientific journals (such as the European History Quarterly) on the subject of economic history, while he has already participated in a large number of international scientific conferences, most recently the International Conference of the Modern Greek Studies Association in Toronto, Canada (in October 2022).

Panagiotou has one child, a son.
