Government weighing further measures to support society says Spokesman

Cyprus’ government is continuously assessing potential measures to support households, with announcements to be made when appropriate, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis has said.

His remarks followed a 21 October meeting at the Presidential Palace, chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides. The focus was on discussing proposals to aid society amidst rising living costs.

The meeting brought together key government officials, such as the Ministers of Finance, Labour and the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare with trade unions, consumer associations, and pensioners organisations.

These groups submitted a memorandum to President Christodoulides with suggestions on how to address the high cost of living affecting Cypriot households.

In a statement after the meeting, Letymbiotis described the discussions as "very constructive and fruitful."

"The government, from the moment it took office, has prioritised tackling inflationary pressures resulting from external crises, whether it be the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine or the ongoing regional challenges," he said. He highlighted that the government has already introduced measures exceeding €500 million.

"We believe that through this dialogue, every proposal is evaluated with the responsibility it deserves, considering the current data and the fiscal capabilities of the state," Letymbiotis added.

He also noted that the government has prioritized several issues, including support for the middle class, small and medium-sized enterprises, housing policy, and vulnerable groups. He emphasized that the largest housing policy in Cyprus' history has been announced, alongside ongoing measures for the vulnerable.

"The comprehensive and multidimensional policy we have presented, which we are constantly enriching, aims to offer permanent solutions to households. These include addressing energy costs through programs like 'Photovoltaics for All' and boosting employment," he said, pointing out that unemployment in Cyprus has hit a 15-year low.

However, Letymbiotis acknowledged that the government remains alert to the challenges households face. "Measures are being constantly evaluated. Recently, the Finance Minister made related announcements, and the government will continue assessing the situation," he said.

When asked whether new measures could be expected soon, Letymbiotis reiterated that the government regularly reviews its options and will announce additional measures when deemed necessary.

Regarding the upcoming expiration of the electricity subsidy at the end of the month, Letymbiotis said that it was under evaluation, and it was discussed today. He added that various measures were being considered across different sectors, and once a careful assessment has been made, they announce their decisions.
