University of Nicosia and Ecliptic Defence and Space Sign MoU

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) and Ecliptic Defence and Space (EDS) have formalised a strategic partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The MoU was signed by the Rector of the University of Nicosia, Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, and the CEO of Ecliptic Defence and Space, Dr Andreas Papanastasiou, during a ceremony held at UNIC.

Ecliptic Defence and Space is a leading company in the defence and aerospace sectors, specialising in cutting-edge technology and innovation. EDS is committed to advancing technological progress through research and development and fostering collaborations between industry and academia.

This partnership is aimed at fostering cooperation in research and development, providing students with real-world industry experiences, and driving innovation in fields such as defence and aerospace. The collaboration is expected to have significant impacts on both the academic and industry landscapes, further solidifying UNIC’s commitment to being at the forefront of research and technological advancement.

Key areas of cooperation under the MoU include:

  1. Joint Research and Funding Initiatives: The two parties will collaborate on submitting proposals and securing funding from EU and national funding bodies, as well as from industry, for cutting-edge research and development projects in the fields of defence, space, and related technologies.
  2. Collaborative Research Projects: UNIC and EDS will jointly implement funded research and development projects, combining their expertise to advance technological innovations that have real-world applications in aerospace, defence, and security.
  3. Student Opportunities and Development: EDS will offer UNIC students internship and workshop opportunities, as well as project-based learning experiences. Students will gain valuable industry exposure and access to EDS’s expertise, preparing them for careers in high-tech industries.
  4. Shared Resources and Facilities: EDS will make its specialised facilities, equipment, and resources available for joint research and development activities with UNIC, enabling both parties to maximise their research potential and foster innovation.
  5. Knowledge Exchange: The partnership will promote knowledge sharing through lectures, workshops, and seminars, encouraging collaboration between academic researchers and industry experts to address key challenges in the fields of defence and space.
  6. Financial Support for Students and Research: EDS will provide financial support, including scholarships and grants, to UNIC for specific research initiatives and to support student development, helping to cultivate the next generation of leaders in science and technology.
  7. Industry-Aligned Curriculum Development: EDS will work with UNIC to identify high-demand industry skills and provide feedback to help shape the university’s curricula, ensuring that they align with the evolving needs of the industry and equip students with the skills needed for the future workforce.
  8. Local Economic and Social Impact: Both UNIC and EDS are committed to engaging in projects and initiatives that support local economic growth and create positive social impacts, contributing to the broader community in Cyprus.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Professor Pouyioutas stated: “This agreement marks a significant step forward in our mission to link academic excellence with real-world industry applications. Partnering with Ecliptic Defence and Space will provide our students and researchers with unparalleled opportunities to engage with leading technologies in the fields of defence and aerospace.”
