The international conference "Innovate, Arbitrate, Resolve: A New Era of Arbitration", organised by the European Court of Arbitration and Mediation for Commercial Disputes, Cyprus Chapter, and European University Cyprus, was a notable success.
Supported by Georgiades & Associates Law Firm, the event was hosted at the European University Cyprus. It attracted a diverse audience, including lawyers, accountants, bankers, entrepreneurs and students from Cyprus and abroad.
The conference extended gratitude to its distinguished speakers and panelists, with special recognition for notable figures such as Michalis Vorkas, President of the Cyprus Bar Association; Mauro Sammartano, President of the European Court of Arbitration; Yiannos Georgiades, President of the Cyprus Chapter of the European Court of Arbitration; Konstantinos Tsimaras, Dean of the Law School at European University Cyprus; Kyriakos Iordanou, General Manager of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants; Komninos Komnios, Hellenic Energy Ombudsman; and Nikos Elia, President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Cyprus Branch. Dr Christiana Markou, Associate Professor of Law at European University Cyprus, and Stephanie Georgiadou, Secretary General of the Cyprus Chapter of the European Court of Arbitration, expertly coordinated the event.
A special panel discussion, moderated by Christophoros Christophi, a lawyer and renowned podcaster of "Legal Matters," delved into critical topics such as the role of arbitration in high-stakes industries, interim measures and emerging trends. The panel explored the integration of artificial intelligence in decision-making, arbitration of blockchain and cryptocurrency disputes, and the role of virtual hearings in managing international, high-value cases, facilitating vibrant interaction with the audience.
Michalis Vorkas praised the Cyprus Chapter's efforts in promoting arbitration procedures, emphasising the goal of establishing Cyprus as a regional arbitration hub.
Yiannos Georgiades highlighted the transformative potential of technology in enhancing arbitration. "The proportionate and wise use of technology," Georgiades stated, "will contribute to making arbitration procedures more efficient." He emphasised that technological tools, when wisely applied, simplify procedures, conserve time and resources and thus enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of arbitration. The discussion underscored the encouragement from various institutions and countries for technology's integration in arbitration, citing real cases reflecting this trend. Georgiades further articulated a visionary goal for the Cyprus Chapter: "Our vision is to not only advance local arbitration practices but to elevate this chapter into a leading Eastern Mediterranean Center for arbitration and mediation. By fostering a robust framework, we aim to position Cyprus as a pivotal hub for resolving disputes in the region, thereby enhancing cross-border business relations and promoting a harmonious business environment."
