Christodoulides in DC for a meeting with US President Biden

President Nikos Christodoulides is in Washington DC for a meeting with US President Joe Biden, the first ever since 1996 when then President, the late Glafkos Klerides, met with President Bill Clinton.

The meeting is set for 5.30pm Cyprus time (11.30am DC time) and US President Joe Biden is expected to reiterate US support for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality for all Cypriots, in a meeting with the President of the Republic, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on 29 October.

"On 30 October, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. will host President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus for a bilateral meeting at the White House. Building on the successful inaugural U.S.-Republic of Cyprus Strategic Dialogue, launched on 23 October, the leaders will discuss a range of global issues, including energy security and cooperation, events in the Middle East, and continued robust support to Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression," her statement reads.

"Acknowledging the 50th anniversary of the island’s division, President Biden will reiterate U.S. support for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality for all Cypriots," Karine Jean-Pierre concludes.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said yesterday that the meeting is a “tangible indication” of the constantly expanding diplomatic footprint of the Republic of Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.

The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
