CMMI in underwater excavation of Nissia shipwreck

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) – being part of the EU-funded THETIDA project – is currently participating in the underwater excavation of the Nissia shipwreck, directed by Dr Stella Demesticha of the Maritime Archaeological Research Laboratory of the University of Cyprus.

The aim of the programme is to safeguard and protect coastal and underwater cultural heritage from the effects of climate change and natural hazards.

According to CMMI, for the next three weeks, an interdisciplinary team will work together to reveal different aspects of the story of the Ottoman shipwreck that has been lying at 28m below sea level, off the coast of Protaras in Cyprus, for over 250 years.

The team will also monitor the underwater environmental conditions that affect the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage.
