Law Office Heads exchange views on judicial matters with officials from India

Cyprus’ Attorney-General George Savvides and Deputy Attorney-General Savvas Angelides met and exchanged views with officials from India on the judicial systems and the courts of third instance in both countries.

According to an announcement, Savvides and Angelides met with Judge Surya Kant of the Supreme Court of India, the Attorney General of India Dr. R Venkataramani, and the President of Commonwealth Legal Education Association, Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar. The officials from India were accompanied by the High Commissioner of India to Cyprus Shri Manish.

The 8 October meeting took place in a “very cordial atmosphere” at the Law Office ,with Cyprus’ Attorney-General informing his interlocutors also about the role and competencies of his office, according to the constitution. On their part, officials from India explained the way the judicial and court system works in their country, characterized by the particularities of a country with a large territory and population, it is added.

Particular reference was made to the Academy of the Republic of Cyprus Law Office and the educational programs on offer at India’s law schools. In this framework the two sides discussed the possibility of exchanges within the current year, if feasible. Officials from India also extended an official invitation to the Attorney-General to visit the country, the announcement concludes.
