President Nikos Christodoulides and Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi stressed the need for de-escalation in the region, over a telephone conversation on 8 October.
In a written statement, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the two leaders “extensively discussed regional developments and shared their common concern for a wider and uncontrolled escalation of tensions and conflict, which may have serious regional implications”. They underlined the need for de-escalation of the crisis and discussed the efforts being made in this direction, including Egypt’s initiatives with other partners, he added.
Meanwhile, President Christodoulides briefed El-Sisi about the MED9 Summit (of the nine Mediterranean EU member states) that will take place in Paphos on 11 October, which will also be joined by the King of Jordan, “and which will also deal with regional developments”.
“The two Presidents also confirmed the excellent long-standing relations between the two countries and underlined their commitment to further strengthening Cyprus-Egypt bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in a number of areas such as economy and energy”, the statement added. “Reference was also made to the tripartite cooperation mechanism with Greece as a means to promote regional cooperation.”
Christodoulides and El-Sisi agreed to remain in close contact and constant communication, the statement concluded.
Cyprus, which holds the MED9 presidency for 2024, is to host a MED9 high-level summit next week in Paphos.
