GOLD New Issue: The Accounting Revolution

In the new issue of GOLD (click here), available on newsstands from Sunday, 17 November, we feature how technology, stricter regulation and changing client demands are shaping the modern profession.

The professional services sector, including accountancy, has long been a major contributor to the Cyprus economy. According to the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat), 2022 saw notable growth in professional services and administrative support, with the sector expanding by 13% and 23.2%, respectively, and creating 38,289 new jobs. Like so many professions, accountancy has been hugely affected by new technologies and changing international standards as the world pivots to meet new climate goals and to deal with troubling geopolitical situations in places such as the Middle East, which have cause tectonic shifts and kept Cyprus as a hub of stability in the region. Regulatory compliance has also become increasingly important, obliging businesses to adapt and upskill their staff. The provision by accountancy firms of services to address these new challenges has led to greater client value and new revenue streams. All professional service providers have had to adapt and become more agile, tech-savvy and human-centric, in an effort to offer the insights and support that truly resonate with clients and are aligned with their strategic goals.

In this cover story, the heads of the ‘Big 4’ and other leading accountancy firms elaborate on how the profession has evolved, transforming them into trusted advisors that help clients navigate the complexity of regulatory changes, digitalisation, compliance and ESG standards.
