PwC Cyprus partners with leading companies for Project Symbiosis

A consortium comprised of PwC Cyprus, Multimarine Services Ltd, SignalGeneriX Ltd, and Theophrastus Research Institute, has been awarded the Project Symbiosis to Harmonise Offshore Renewable Energy with Defence Operations by the European Defence Agency (EDA).

As noted in a relevant press release, "This ambitious initiative aims to foster the coexistence of offshore renewable energy installations and defence activities within European maritime space, addressing the unique challenges and identifying the opportunities of integrating sustainable energy solutions with strategic defence needs."

"Together, the consortium is uniquely positioned to deliver innovative solutions that support Europe’s goals for a decarbonized energy system while ensuring national security and operational effectiveness," the announcement continued.

A Strategic Initiative for Europe's Future

It went on to describe Project Symbiosis as "a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to secure Europe's energy independence and environmental sustainability while safeguarding its defence operations."

"As the continent strives to meet its ambitious decarbonization goals, the project addresses the complex challenge of integrating offshore renewable energy installations with existing and future defence activities in Europe's maritime spaces. Through a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach, Project Symbiosis aims to create a comprehensive mapping of Europe’s five sea basins, employing simulation and modelling techniques to analyse potential conflicts and synergies between energy infrastructure and defence operations." the press release said.

The project aims to develop innovative, tailored mitigation strategies that will ensure the continued operational effectiveness of defence systems in the context of conflicts due to the operation of offshore renewable energy infrastructures but also promote the growth of offshore renewable energy, it went on to note.

"By fostering a harmonious coexistence between these two critical sectors, Project Symbiosis aims to create a sustainable blueprint for Europe’s oceans that balances ecological integrity, energy security, and national defence readiness. This initiative represents a significant step forward in aligning Europe’s environmental objectives with its strategic defence priorities, paving the way for a resilient, energy-secure, and climate-neutral future," the press release concluded.
