The National Observatory of Cyprus (Troodos Observatory) has been announced as Civic Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2024, which took place in Singapore.
The World Architecture Festival is the largest international architectural awards, dedicated to honouring architectural excellence and showcasing inspiring architecture from around the globe.
The Cypriot architectural firm Kyriakos Tsolakis Architects competed against some of the world’s most revered architectural practices, including Zaha Hadid Architects, BIG, Renzo Piano, Grimshaw, Adjaye Associates, MVRDV and Foster + Partners.
The firm’s standout project was selected as a winner in the Civic Completed Projects, which celebrates the most inspiring architectural civic built achievements globally. Partner Elena K. Tsolakis presented the project live to a distinguished audience of delegates and a panel of esteemed judges, consisting of leading architects and industry experts.
Funded by European and Cypriot resources, the project aims to create a positive impact on the local community. The architects envisioned a landmark building that attracts visitors and can foster a micro-economy in the region. It is designed to open people up to the wonders of the universe, inspiring the next generation of scientists to enter fields critical to the future of our planet.
Founded by Kyriakos Tsolakis, the practice Kyriakos Tsolakis Architects is now led by his children Elena K. Tsolakis, Nicodemos Tsolakis, and Cassandra Tsolakis. The practice continues to work on significant buildings, spaces, and master-plans, both in Cyprus and internationally.
