Deputy Minister of Shipping discusses deepening Cyprus-Egypt collaboration

Cyprus and Egypt are set to deepen their collaboration in the maritime sector, with plans to establish a Joint Maritime Committee to ensure continuοus communication and coordination.

This was the focus of discussions held by Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hadjimanolis, during her recent official visit to Egypt from 29 to 31 October, following an invitation from Egypt’s Minister of Transport.

According to a press release by the Deputy Ministry, Hadjimanolis also held separate meetings with the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, the President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport, and the Governor of Alexandria.

During talks with Egypt’s Minister of Transport, both sides reaffirmed the strong bilateral relations between Cyprus and Egypt, underlining the potential for closer ties through the proposed Joint Maritime Committee, established under an existing commercial shipping agreement between the two countries.

In Ismailia, Hadjimanolis met with Suez Canal Authority officials, where she discussed recent developments affecting the global trade flow and explored collaboration in green transformation and clean energy initiatives.

While in Alexandria, the press release says, Hadjimanolis visited the Arab Academy of Science Technology and Maritime Transport, where she signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost cooperation in maritime education, research, technology, and innovation.

She also met with Alexandria’s Governor, where she outlined Cyprus’ national strategy for cruise tourism and sought further cooperation with neighbouring nations in this field. Additionally, she engaged with representatives of an Egyptian-owned shipping company to promote Cyprus’ shipping registry.

Her visit coincided with World Cities Day on 31 October, an event led by the United Nations to raise awareness of sustainable urban development. She attended the celebration, where Egypt’s Prime Minister delivered an address, alongside senior Egyptian officials and China’s Minister of Housing, Urban and Rural Development, and exchanged views with other attending dignitaries, the press release concludes.
