The Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence (ECoE) and the Association of Cypriot Archaeologists (ACA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration in the fields of cultural heritage protection, preservation and promotion.
In a press release issued by the Cyprus University of Technology, it is noted that this partnership will serve as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, resources, and expertise, benefiting both organisations and contributing to the greater preservation of Cyprus’ cultural heritage with an impact on society.
The MoU was signed by Prof. Diofantos Hadjimitsis, Managing Director of ECoE, and Dr. Maria Michael, President of ACA. "This agreement marks the beginning of a new chapter in cooperative efforts between two organisations dedicated to safeguarding Cyprus’ rich cultural legacy", they note.
Under the terms of the MoU, ECoE and ACA have committed to a joint participation in research and events, to exchange of information, scientific documentation, and publications, capacity building through training, educational and public awareness initiatives and to combating illicit trafficking of cultural property.
The MoU, which will be in effect for three years (2024-2027), has the potential to be renewed based on mutual agreement and a joint progress report. This initiative is part of the broader activity of the Cultural Heritage cluster of ECoE’s Resilient Society Department. The aim of the cluster is to maximise the benefits of the application of Earth observation and digital technologies for the protection, management and preservation of cultural heritage.
"This MoU highlights the importance of collaboration with civil society organisations", says the CUT's press release. Involving communities and organisations deeply rooted in cultural heritage is essential to building a sustainable future for the shared history, it notes, adding that "ECoE is thrilled about the opportunities ahead and look forward to working closely with the Association on these impactful initiatives."
