Cyprus and UK identify shared initiatives to enhance cooperation
07:57 - 18 December 2024
Cyprus and the UK have concluded the second review of their Strategic Dialogue in a meeting between diplomatic officials in London, following a meeting between Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
The Strategic Dialogue aims to put flesh on the bones of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries in November 2022.
The Chairs of the two delegations, Andreas Kakouris, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus and Dame Deborah Bronnert, Director General Europe of the Foreign Office, assessed progress made since the last annual review (December 2023 in Nicosia) and identified future initiatives to build on the “deep and historic relations” between the two counties. They also declared their joint ambition to work even closer in the pursuit of new opportunities on the basis of mutual respect.
The UK and Cyprus also reaffirmed their commitment to work closely together for a just and lasting settlement to the Cyprus problem within the UN parameters for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as described in the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
The areas of cooperation identified in the Strategic Dialogue are: foreign and regional policy; defence and security; education, culture, science and innovation; trade and prosperity; maritime affairs; climate and nature; law enforcement, serious organised crime and terrorism; legal and justice affairs; consular and people-to-people.
The meeting took place on 17 December.
