Cyprus points out need for reforms and innovation at EU Competitiveness Council

The Acting Permanent Secretary of Cyprus' Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, Georgios Komodromos, has noted the importance of reforms to foster an attractive investment environment, particularly for startups.

He was speaking during the recent EU Competitiveness Council meeting on Research and Space held in Brussels. Discussions on 29 November centered on enhancing European competitiveness through research and innovation, following recommendations outlined in the Draghi Report.

In his remarks, Komodromos pointed out the need for targeted policies and incentives to strengthen private investments in research and innovation across member states while improving the efficiency of public spending. He highlighted the role of the upcoming 10th Framework Programme in fostering research excellence and technological innovation, key elements for addressing Europe’s innovation gap.

On the topic of space, Komodromos stressed the need for synergy between space and defence policies to bolster Europe’s strategic autonomy and sustainability in the sector.

Cyprus co-signed a joint statement with 21 other member states supporting the independence of the European Research Council (ERC) to maintain its focus on academic excellence. Komodromos further engaged in discussions with the Polish and Danish Presidencies as part of the Presidency Trio, addressing research priorities and infrastructure needs for the coming term.
