Digital Citizen app now available on Google Play and App Store

As of today, 5 December 5, 2024, the 'Digital Citizen' mobile application is available for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store.

The move was welcomed by President Nikos Christodoulides. The "Digital Citizen" app is live, the President of the Republic wrote in a post on X, noting that a new era of digital services for citizens and businesses is being launched.

"Through the application, every citizen can now issue and store official documents in digital format, for any legal use in the country," he says, noting that citizens have the possibility in the first phase to obtain digital identity cards, driving licences and vehicle registration certificates.

"This is an important step towards the Digital Transformation of our country, which aims to create a modern, friendly and efficient state. The simplification of procedures, saving time and improving services is at the heart of our efforts, with the ultimate goal of upgrading the quality of life of all Cypriots and improving their daily lives. The new era is here: easy, simple, digital," Christodoulides noted.

As stated in the press release from the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, the 'Digital Citizen' app is the official mobile application of the Cypriot Government, "It allows citizens to create and maintain official documents in digital format, which are fully equivalent to their printed versions for all legal uses within the Republic of Cyprus."

The Deputy Ministry underlined that the digital documents generated through the app are not international travel documents.

"Initially, the app supports the creation of digital copies of Identity Cards, Driver’s Licenses, and Vehicle Roadworthiness Certificates (MOT). Citizens can only generate digital copies if they hold a valid printed version of the respective certificate," the announcement points out.

Citizens can now present their digital documents to public services, such as Citizen Service Centres (KEP-KE.PO.) The tool is also immediately available for use in the private sector.

"The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy urges all entities to promptly integrate the acceptance of digital document formats into their procedures. A follow-up announcement will specify a transition period for adaptation before accepting digital documents via the 'Digital Citizen' app becomes mandatory," the announcement goes on to note.

Usage Requirements

To use the app, citizens must have an active and verified CY Login profile, the common access mechanism for government systems and services. The app also requires the 'Two-Factor Authentication' (2FA) feature to be activated in the CY Login profile.

Citizens who do not yet have a CY Login account can follow the steps detailed at the following link to create, activate, and verify their profile: CY Login Registration.

Document Verification

The authenticity of digital documents issued via the app can be verified with absolute security, the Deputy Ministry also notes.

Documents can be checked by scanning the QR code embedded in each digital document. Using the “Document Verification” feature, and with the user’s consent, officials can confirm the document's authenticity through the app.

For more information, a dedicated website has been created at www.digital-citizen.gov.cy. The website includes detailed information about the app, FAQs, and a Technical Support service where citizens can submit requests related to app usage or the creation and management of their documents.

The app will be officially unveiled alongside other digital tools, such as the gov.cy portal—which will now feature a Digital Assistant—at a Press Conference on 12 December, 2024.
