07:00 - 12 March 2024
The CEO of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), Zacharias Siokouros, attended a series of events to mark European Ocean Days in Brussels on 4-8 March.
Organised for the first time in 2024 by the European Commission, European Ocean Days covered the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters", future priorities for Europe’s Seas, blue innovation and investment opportunities, as well as ocean literacy activities.
“A unique opportunity for exchanging ideas, exploring collaborations with existing and potential partners and getting informed of new developments,” CMMI said on its LinkedIn.
Events included discussions with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) about the achievements and future of the EU’s Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’, while ‘Ocean Literacy in Action’ comprised of various panel discussions with important actors, according to CMMI.
“With a 2030 target, the EU Mission ‘Restore our Ocean and Waters’ aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments,” it said. “CMMI is proud of being one of the Mission’s signatories working on achieving the mission’s objectives by adopting them as its own strategic priorities.”
Moreover, it added, “CMMI is leading the efforts in Cyprus to connect civil society, local communities, but most importantly the younger generation, with the Sea around us through the organisation of various activities under the umbrella of a programme named ‘Our Sea’”.
CMMI concluded that creating an ocean-literate society able to make informed and responsible decisions on ocean resources and ocean sustainability is of paramount importance for achieving its objectives.
