Honorary Consul of Belgium Marios E. Lanitis decorated by the Belgian government

During an elegant ceremony, the Ambassador of Belgium in Greece and Cyprus, Marc Calcoen, in the name of His Majesty the King of the Belgians, bestowed the title of Officer of the order of the Crown on the Honorary Consul of Belgium in Cyprus, Mr Marios E. Lanitis.

The Order was established on 15 October 1897, by King Leopold II, and it is given to individuals for their outstanding services to the Belgian state.

This distinction was given to Mr Lanitis, on his retirement from this post, in recognition for his excellent services, as an Honorary Consul, from 1986 until 2023, to the Belgian community in Cyprus, for the preservation of the interests of the country he represented as well as the development of Cyprus-Belgium cooperation, in various fields of the Society.

In his speech, the Belgian Ambassador stated that the Honorary Consulate in Cyprus has been safeguarded by the Lanitis family since 1934, during which time the family has undertaken great effort to promote a strong and friendly relationship between Belgium and Cyprus.

In his reply to the Ambassador’s speech, Mr Lanitis mentioned that the Honorary Consulate in Cyprus has indeed been in the Lanitis family since 1934. He stated that he feels very proud for the great distinction bestowed on him and he assured that, his family will continue to offer their services to the Belgian community on the island, for as long as they are required, always with the same commitment. Especially, now that his son, Nicolas Lanitis has taken over the role of the new Honorary Consul of Belgium.
