Deputy Commissioner for Communications asks for EC assistance with Electronic Communications Regulators

Deputy Commissioner for Communications, Petros Galides, has asked for the European Commission's assistance with the European Mediterranean Regulators Group (EMERG) and Eastern Partnership Electronic Communications Regulators Network (EaPeReg).

He made the request during the EaPeReg General Assembly held in Bucharest, Romania on 22 and 23 May 2024.

According to a press release from the Office of the Commissioner for the Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (OCECPR) Galides participated in the General Assembly in his capacity as President of EMERG.

It is added that Galides participated in a round table discussion on "Insights on Plans, ongoing Projects and Priorities" where he referred to the work programme and the objectives of EMERG for 2024, as well as to the work programme of OCECPR in light of the new regulations issued by the European Commission (Gigabit infrastructure Act, Gigabit Recommendation etc.).

In addition, it is noted that Galides, in his intervention in a section of the Conference on International Cooperation, underlined EMERG's commitment to continue working to strengthen international cooperation in the Mediterranean region among its Member States and with other international organisations such as ITU, EaPeReg and the European Commission.

He further highlighted the importance of collaborations in emerging new technology areas related to Electronic Communications, such as cybersecurity, digital markets and artificial intelligence (AI).

It is reported that as a result of these new realities, Galides called for the European Commission to upgrade its assistance to EMERG and EaPeReg in their efforts to address these new challenges, expecting the EU to recognise new, additional competences to these organisations.

Galides was accompanied by Panagiotis Kyriakides, an OCECPR Officer.
