The candidates elected deputy mayor at major municipalities
14:36 - 10 June 2024
One of the many innovations of the Local Government Reform is the election of deputy mayors directly by the citizens, in contrast to what has been the case until now.
The deputy mayors of each municipal district are expected to have increased powers and responsibilities while the Reform also provides for their salary upgrade, depending on the size of the municipal district they represent.
Regarding the remuneration of the deputy mayors, the original provision of the Law provided that all deputy mayors would be paid 50% of the Mayor's remuneration. Therefore, the 93 deputy mayors would have received a salary of €2,986.79 per month, greatly increasing the payroll for the Local Government.
However, in this context, the Ministry of Internal Affairs promoted legislation that changed this provision and now a reduction of the salaries of the deputy mayors to 20% of the mayors' salary for those representing communities of 1-500 inhabitants, 30% for communities with 501-1000 inhabitants and 50% for vice-mayors representing municipalities or communities with more than a thousand inhabitants.
