Council of Europe SG to meet with President Christodoulides during Cyprus visit

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić will pay an official visit to Cyprus from 30 June to 2 July, where she will be received by the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides on Monday, 1 July.
The Secretary General of the Council of Europe will have a private meeting with the President of the Republic, followed by a working lunch.
A Presidency press release said that the two will discuss, inter alia, issues related to the agenda of the Council of Europe, the situation on the Cyprus problem and the ongoing efforts to resume dialogue, the management of aspects of the 4th Interstate Appeal of Cyprus against Turkey, the Turkish violations of the status quo of the fenced off area of Famagusta as well as the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
During her official visit, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe will give a lecture to the members of the Diplomatic Academy and will have a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, as well as with the Mayor of Nicosia before departing on 2nd July.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appointed María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar of Colombia as his personal envoy for Cyprus, to assume a Good Offices role on his behalf and search for common ground on the way forward in the Cyprus issue.
