Cyprus and Egypt sign MoU for the employment of Egyptians in Cyprus

Cyprus and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of  Understanding for the employment of Egyptians in Cyprus.

Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos, who is in Egypt for a working visit, together with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry, on 4 June signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Governments of the Republic of Cyprus and the Arab  Republic of Egypt for the employment of Egyptian citizens in Cyprus, a Foreign Ministry press release said.

The objective of the Memorandum, it says, "is to facilitate and regulate the entry and residence of Egyptian workers who come to Cyprus for employment in various sectors, depending on the needs of the market and the Government's policy."

It is added that the MoU offers the possibility of access to the labour market by Egyptian citizens in a structured, gradual and controlled manner.

Furthermore it says that the Memorandum was completed within four months, which emphasizes the political will of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries to strengthen bilateral cooperation and for a mutually beneficial effect in the economic sector.

A Joint Committee, under the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, will oversee the implementation of the Memorandum, ensuring its effectiveness and recommending amendments if necessary. It is added that the first year will be a pilot phase to evaluate the procedures and implementation of the Memorandum. 

The MoU includes provisions related to social security, the transfer of benefits and the maintenance of the confidentiality of the information exchanged, the press release ends.
