Christodoulides congratulates Metsola after her re-election as EP President

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has congratulated Roberta Metsola for her re-election as President of the European Parliament, in a post on X, noting the shared goal for ending the division of Cyprus.

"Heartfelt congratulations my good friend President of the European Parliament for your fully deserved re-election. We will continue our excellent cooperation at EUCO and EP, also in view of 2026 CY Presidency," Christodoulides said in his post.

"Fully share goal to be the generation to end Cyprus' division based on UNSCRs and EU values," he added.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, has also congratulated Roberta Metsola for her re-election at the presidency of the European Parliament.

"Congratulations dear Roberta Metsola on your re-election as EP President. We fully share your vision for a strong European Parliament in a strong Europe," Kombos noted in a post on X.

The European Parliament is willing to play its part regarding the Cyprus problem, Roberta Metsola, the newly elected EP President said, during a 16 July press conference. Earlier, in her speech, she also referred to the 50-year anniversary since Turkey invaded Cyprus and to the need for a viable solution.

"We mark 50 sad years of an artificially divided Cyprus. We must be the generation that is able to find a way forward under the auspices of the UN plan. We must finally plug that dark gap in Europe’s history with a viable solution in line with Security Council resolutions and our European values", she said in her speech, after the results were announced.

During the press conference that followed, answering to a journalist on what initiatives could the EP assume regarding the Cyprus problem, she reminded that on her election speech in 2022 she had said that Europe can never be united, while Cyprus is divided.

"We are commemorating the sad anniversary of 1974. A statement on Cyprus will take place tomorrow, in order to send the strongest signal: that EP is willing to play its part and is recalling the need for all other parties to play this part", she noted.

Metsola was reelected with 562 votes to the position of the President of the European Parliament, receiving the most votes ever for the position.

In her speech, she also underlined the need for a strong European Parliament, acting in a strong Europe, and said that the EP should pursuit further the right of initiative. She noted that she will try to build bridges and work with those majorities that want to build something, not destroy, as she put it.

Moreover, she said that the need for a continuous support to Ukraine is among her priorities. Regarding the Middle East, she said that we should push for an end to the intergenerational cycle of violence, for a two-State Solution, a sustainable peace and the return of hostages.
